I've been a fire captain for 23 years. I've walked into more RVs than I can count on carbon monoxide calls. And the thing I see every single time breaks my heart.
A family did everything right. They checked the detector. They saw the green light. They pressed the test button. It beeped. They went to bed believing their kids were safe.
And the detector did nothing while their family breathed poison.
Every call is the same. I walk in. I take readings. The numbers on my meter are high enough to make me hold my breath. And right there on the wall, the CO detector is sitting with its green light on. Silent. Not a sound.
The family always says the same thing.
"But I tested it."
"The green light was on."
"It beeped when I pressed the button."
I've heard those sentences so many times I could say them in my sleep.
Here's what most RV owners don't know. That test button does not test whether the sensor can detect gas. It tests whether the speaker can make a sound. Those are two completely different things.
You press the button. The speaker beeps. The green light comes on. You walk away thinking your family is protected. But the part that actually detects carbon monoxide, the sensor, was never checked.
That sensor has a lifespan. Usually 5 to 7 years. After that it starts to weaken. It detects less and less until eventually it detects nothing at all.
But here's the problem. The green light stays on. The test button still beeps. Everything about the detector looks and sounds exactly the same as the day you bought it.
The only part that changed is the one part you can't see.
I've pulled detectors off RV walls that were 8, 9, even 11 years old. Green light glowing. Test button working. Sensor completely dead. The families had no idea. They thought that green light meant safe.
It means the unit has power. That's all.
Now here's the part that really keeps me up at night.
Even if your sensor is brand new, even if it's working perfectly, your detector is engineered to stay completely silent below 70 PPM.
And even after the air reaches 70, the detector is allowed to wait up to 4 hours before it has to make a sound.
Think about that. 25 PPM, 35 PPM, 50 PPM. Inside a small RV with the doors closed and the furnace running, those levels are genuinely dangerous. For anyone. For adults. For children. For anyone sleeping in a space that small with air that compromised.
And the detector is under no obligation to respond.
That's not a defect. That's the engineering standard. That's how it was designed.
So you have two problems at the same time. Your sensor might already be dead and you'd never know. And even if it's alive, it's built to stay quiet during the exact hours when your family is most vulnerable.
Old detector or new detector. The green light fails you either way.
Every firefighter in my station knows this. Every RV tech I've talked to knows this. Most families don't. Because nobody tells them until it's too late.
That's why I started telling every RV family I meet about a different kind of monitor.

Every RV tech I know has one in their personal rig. Because they see what comes through the shop every week. Fouled furnaces. Cracked heat exchangers. Generators 3 feet from the sleeping area. And a standard detector with a green light on the wall that wouldn't have caught any of it.
Check your detector tonight. Flip it over. Look at the manufacture date. Press the test button and understand what that beep actually means.
Then decide whether a green light is enough for the people sleeping in your rig.
